Classroom:Despite being the team leader for Jacksonville’s men’s soccer team, Axelsson still finds time for a double-major—psychology and philosophy. He enjoys studying human nature, mind and behavior. He is planning a professional career in counseling that will start with graduate studies in psychology. A straight-A student (one A-) Axelsson has a 3.984 GPA and is expected to graduate in Spring 2009.
Character:Axelsson demonstrates character in the classroom, on the soccer field as a captain and a team player, and well as in public life. Though he is from Sweden, he worked hard to adapt to the American culture so that he would fit in with his teammates and community. He enjoys helping his teammates, whether it is helping them with their studies, or rehabbing from an injury.
Community:He is a member of the National Honor Society in Psychology, “Psi Chi”. Student-Athlete Advisory Committee representative and is involved in SAAC’s many community-service projects including the Daniel Foundation and “Adopt a Soldier”. When he is not in school, Axelsson works at a mental hospital as a caretaker. His volunteer work includes being a youth soccer coach and as an elementary school assistant.
Competition:Axelsson has earned second-team Atlantic Sun all-conference team honors, after combining for 17 goals and 12 assists for a total of 46 points, the last two seasons. Last year he also was named to the all-tournament team as he led JU to the A-Sun semifinals. He finished second in the conference in goals and assists his junior season. To begin the season he was named to the 2007 preseason all-conference first team.
